The Mudge [mmm-oo (as in "wood")-dhj], who were often mispronounced as "The MUD-dhj", were your quintessential high school band: totally lacking in experience, having only the most passable of skills and often drinking cheap liquor during practice. The Mudge only ever did live performances at their high school, Western Heights College.
James was picked up as lyricist/vocalist after Matt heard him singing '28 Days' songs in class. The Mudge got their bearings in early life by playing many rock covers, including their '28 Days' favorites. The band name was invented by James, ever the wordsmith, and it described the process of how our songs were written. He wrote the lyrics, we wrote the music and then all the pieces were "mudged" together to create a song.
The basic recipe for The Mudge was this:
We had a lot of good times, a lot of adventures and had a lot of support from friends. Songs and videos on this site were found from old VHS tapes (recorded using borrowed school equipment) and audio cassette tapes.

The basic recipe for The Mudge was this:
- James was by no means a trained singer, but it was something he was naturally above par at. He could emulate any existing song quite well, but was subject to somehow pairing a vocal melody with the unforgiving riffs that we wrote. They weren't accommodating and we could not write vocal melodies to save ourselves
- What Matthew lacked in skill, he made up for with expensive equipment and cigarette smoke. He would often come back into a practice session having just smoked a blunt and accuse people of touching the settings on his amplifier
- Reece had only just started out on bass and was writing the most basic of bass lines. Only later on in the band's life did the bass lines actually start to evolve and add some dynamic to the band's sound
- Tom was well-practised in drums and was actually a pretty solid backbone for the band
